End of the Year Update, Cross Restored

This has been a year of good news for Nevelson Chapel. The most significant bit of good news is we have begun to address the damage created by the HVAC failure during the COVID-19 shutdown. This past summer, Conservators Martha Singer and Jean Dommermuth treated Cross of the Good Shepherd. They reconsolidated lifting paint and filled losses, as well as toned the sculpture to give it the uniform presentation we all think of as quintessentially Nevelson. In 2024, their effort will expand to other elements of the Chapel, tailored by experience with this initial work.

In a year where so many of the things we care about are beginning to return, we’ve been delighted by the return of so many people to Nevelson Chapel—school groups, tourists, Midtown’s business community, people looking for some solace in a busy city and at a difficult time. Next time you are in the neighborhood, please stop by.

You may see Martha and Jean hard at work; you might want to take in a moment of silence; you could be sharing this “hidden gem” with a friend.

Finally, we share the news that we are beginning the fundraising effort for two endowments: one to ensure Nevelson Chapel’s long-term care (a $1 million goal), and another to help us host vibrant programming into the future (a $2 million goal).

We have a $300,000 solid head start toward this effort. As this year comes to a close, any gift to the Nevelson Legacy Council will provide a strong kick-start and lasting impact for this collaborative effort.
